Steinberg introduces a compact, yet powerful two-channel audio interface with 32-bit/192 kHz audio resolution and flexible headphone monitoring modes ideal for recording and performing – the UR24C

Steinberg today announced the immediate availability of its new audio interface: the UR24C. It is the latest of an entire line-up of UR-C USB 3.0 interfaces that are designed for musicians, producers and performers.
As with each UR-C interface, the UR24C provides USB Type-C (USB 3.1 Gen 1 SuperSpeed) connectivity to ensure universal compatibility with both PCs and Mac computers, as well as iOS devices. It features 32-bit/192 kHz audio resolution, MIDI and delivers DSP power for using effects when monitoring audio without latency. Alongside the dspMixFx mixer that accesses the DSP effects — REV-X reverb, Channel Strip and Guitar Amp Classics — the UR24C comes with a comprehensive software bundle: the Cubase AI music production software, the Basic FX Suite consisting of effects and sound processing tools, native versions of the DSP effects (both VST 3 and AU compatible) and the Cubasis LE music production app for the iPad.

The UR24C features two balanced Neutrik combo inputs, high-grade D-PRE microphone preamps, two TRS main outputs, four RCA line outputs, and MIDI in and out. Its specialty lies in the switchable monitor modes for headphones: DAW mode is used for producing music with a DAW, such as Cubase or Nuendo, where the signal from output 1 or output 2 is chosen as the headphone source while allowing the user to adjust the balance of the signals from the DAW and from the UR24C’s inputs; DJ mode is expected to be used for performances with DJ software and backing tracks where the signal is split so the mono master sound is output to the right side of the headphones and the mono cue sound to the left, also letting the user adjust the balance of both signals.

Steinberg’s Senior Marketing Manager, Stefan Schreiber, commented: “With its build quality, first-class components and 32-bit/192 kHz resolution, the whole UR-C range of interfaces sets a very high standard. The UR24C includes all these competitive advantages, but also comes with a unique and flexible concept of monitoring that works both in the studio and on stage.”

Availability and pricing

The UR24C audio interface will be available in the first quarter of this year through the Steinberg Online Shop and from resellers. Availability may vary by region. The suggested retail price is US $319.00.

• MIDI input and output
• Rugged metal casing
• Includes Cubase AI DAW software download version and Cubasis LE for iPad and dspMixFx editor application for Windows, macOS and iOS

D’Angelico releases the Excel Series Throwback collection of archtop guitars

Watch Now

The Excel Series Throwback Collection

Incorporating details and design elements from John D’Angelico’s original archtops as they became more ornate throughout the 1940s, both the single-cutaway EXL-1 Throwback and non-cutaway Style B Throwback feature the new 7-ply scroll-style headstock design, macassar ebony headstock plate, ebony fingerboard, throwback f-holes, satin ebony pickguards, and two new finishes—Vintage Natural and Viola.

EXCEL EXL-1 THROWBACK
A vintage spin on our flagship model, the Excel EXL-1 Throwback embodies the legacy of fine archtops. A 17-inch-wide, 3-inch-deep body emanates warm, woody archtop tone propelled by a single floating Seymour Duncan Johnny Smith mini-humbucker. And visually—it’s hard to look away. Old-school full-fret mother-of-pearl fingerboard inlays on an ebony fingerboard lead to a scroll-style headstock designed by John D’Angelico in the 30s, while a satin ebony pickguard meets a spruce top featuring multi-bound Throwback f-holes.

EXCEL STYLE B THROWBACK
Back by popular demand and reimagined for the first time since its debut, the Excel Style B Throwback is a slimmed down non-cutaway archtop and time machine to the Jazz Age. A slim-C neck profile, shallow upper bout depth, and 25-inch scale length make the Style B Throwback a notably comfortable archtop while still maintaining robust acoustic tone. Old-school details and Throwback Collection appointments—including the scroll-style headstock designed by John D’Angelico in the 30s—make the Style B a visual stunner.

Both models are $1999.99 and are now available through our authorized dealers.

Electro-Harmonix Oceans 12 lets the user pair reverbs in myriad combinations running them in series or parallel

Electro-Harmonix introduces the Oceans 12 featuring two simultaneous, independent, stereo reverb engines, series and parallel control for the dual reverbs, 24 presets and advanced I/O allowing for stereo in/out, splitting reverbs to left and right channels, or mono send/return with pre and post reverb options. The pedal also includes a new Tide Control for stereo image alteration, a Lo-fi Control, an infinite attenuation control and an input jack for external expression and footswitch control. The Oceans 12’s reverbs types are as follows:

• ROOM – two modes: reverb algorithms modeled after a lively room and a spacious performance hall

• SPRING – two modes: vintage 1962 Fender® 6G15 tube reverb emulation and the spring algorithm from the EHX Holy Grail

• PLATE – two modes: two emulations of the smooth, metal plate reverb often used in high-end recording studios during the 1960s and ‘70s

• REVERSE – two modes: a reverse reverb effect as well as true reversed echoes

• ECHO – three modes: a digital delay with various echo rhythms feeding into a plate reverb

• TREM – three modes: a classic, periodic volume envelope with various shapes applied to both the wet and dry mix of a hall reverb

• MOD – three modes: combinations of chorus and flange reverbs that create rich reverb tails

• DYNA – three dynamic, experimental reverb algorithms: swell, gate and duck

• AUTO-INF – three modes: auto-infinite reverb (w/optional chorus or flange) that “listens” to your playing and crossfades to a new reverb wash upon detection of newly struck notes.

• SHIMMER – two modes: two configurations of a rich octave-shifted reverb wash

• POLYPHONIC – two modes: two configurable bi-directional pitch shifts that add dimensionality to the reverb tail

• RESONANT – two modes: reverb excited by tunable resonators and configurable self-oscillating filters on the reverb tail

A Tails switch provides a choice of whether the reverb effect fades out naturally or stops immediately when the pedal is switched to bypass. In most settings the pedal is also capable of producing infinite reverb which can be played over with a different reverb effect.

The Oceans 12 comes equipped with a standard EHX 9.6DC200mA power supply, is available now and features a U.S. List Price of $237.60

After a wait of 37 years, the MIDI 2.0 Specifications are here and available for download

MIDI 2.0 enhances virtually all aspects of the original MIDI 1.0 spec, which revolutionized the world of technology and the arts when it was introduced in 1983. Unlike the original spec, which consisted of a transmitter talking to a receiver, the new specification now enables two-way communication between MIDI devices. This allows for features like automatic setup, based on one device querying another, obtaining a response, and configuring itself. This also ensures backward compatibility. If a MIDI 2.0 device can’t carry on a two-way conversation, it recognizes that it’s talking to a MIDI 1.0 device, and adjusts its communications accordingly.

Aside from improving ease of use and workflow, MIDI 2.0 delivers more nuanced expressiveness for electronic instruments. It’s now possible to convey the same kind of subtle expression normally associated with acoustic instruments, thanks to higher-resolution dynamics and control data, vastly extended controller options (including per-note controllers for exceptional articulation), and simplified controller assignments.

The complete set of five core MIDI 2.0 specifications, as ratified at the MMA (MIDI Manufacturers Association) meeting during the Winter NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) convention in Anaheim, California, is now available for download to developers and the general public. To obtain the set of specifications, simply join The MIDI Association, the global community of people who work, play, and create with MIDI.

Anyone can sign up for a no-obligation, free membership at https://www.midi.org/midi-signup.

Companies that would like to become MMA members to access the MMA’s software and tools for MIDI 2.0 development can now apply online here.

With over 23,000 members in 113 countries, TMA and its associated website have become the epicenter for everything relating to MIDI, including news, applications, articles and tutorials, downloads of the MIDI specification, discussion forums, and more.

Gene Joly, the MMA’s current President, states “We are happy to provide access to the complete MIDI 2.0 specifications to everyone, and believe MIDI 2.0 will unleash a level of innovation in music and the arts we haven’t seen since MIDI 1.0 changed the world. All of us are excited about what MIDI 2.0 will bring to music and the arts.”

The following specifications are now available.

M2-100-U v1.0 MIDI 2.0 Specification Overview
M2-101-UM v1.1 MIDI-CI Specification
M2-102-U v1.0 Common Rules for MIDI-CI Profiles
M2-103-UM v1.0 Common Rules for MIDI-CI PE

Gretsch Drums announces the launch of the Brooklyn Standard snare drum in collaboration with acclaimed educator Mike Johnston

When Mike Johnston contacted Gretsch about developing a new snare drum concept, he was very specific about what he wanted it to accomplish. It needed to be extremely versatile, to possess a wide dynamic range, and excel in all playing situations across a wide variety of tunings.  Plus, it needed to live up to the look and heritage of Gretsch Drums and be accessible to students and players who were ready to step up to their very first pro-grade snare drum.  After 9 months of prototyping, feedback, and thorough evaluation, the Brooklyn Standard™ was born.

Each individual feature and specification has been chosen for the way it affects the sound, dynamics and playability of the drum and make this snare a must-have for any serious collection: The 5.5×14 Brooklyn formula 6-ply North American Maple/Poplar shell has its own distinctive sound and the double 45 degree bearing edges make for a snappier, crisp sound with great sensitivity. The batter side tone control provides a supplementary muting option, the extra wide 42-strand chrome plated snare wires give a beautiful buzz and 302 hoops offer great cross sticking sounds.

The drum (GAS5514-ST) is finished in Satin Black Metallic with a Silver Sealer™ interior which is accentuated with Gretsch tube lugs, Lightning throw-off™ and Gretsch Permatone® heads by Remo USA®.  An inside identification label signed by Mike Johnston specifies the year of production.

See Mike Johnston, Mark Guiliana and Victor Indrizzo talking about the new drum and putting it through its paces here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsBeewa2iBg
