Fender spotlights famed players with all-new artist signature electric guitar and bass models

Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) today announced the expansion of its artist signature electric guitar and bass offerings at Summer NAMM 2018 in Nashville, Tenn. Catering to seasoned players across genres, new additions include: the Flea Jazz Bass® Active, Albert Hammond Jr. Stratocaster®, Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster, and Johnny Marr Jaguar® in Lake Placid Blue. These artist-inspired models come off the heels of this month’s introduction of the Player Series, an all-new, accessibly priced line of electric guitars and basses for aspiring players who represent the future of guitar.

Launching in Summer and Fall 2018 is an expansion of Fender’s artist signature line with three new models—Flea Jazz Bass Active, Albert Hammond Jr. Stratocaster and Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster ($874.99—$1,799.99). In addition to these three new models, the Johnny Marr Jaguar, originally released in 2012, is being released in a new color—Lake Placid Blue.

“The artist signature electric guitar and bass models we’re unveiling at Summer NAMM are both dynamic and eclectic in style and musical taste—spotlighting top players, from Albert Hammond Jr. and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Johnny Marr and Jimi Hendrix,” said Justin Norvell, SVP Fender Products. “Our second artist signature active bass with Flea was designed to complement the Shell Pink Flea Jazz Bass—a reproduction of his beloved recording bass we recreated with him in 2016. This new active model is a complete 180 from the super vintage-style of the other; it’s hyper-modern and ready for the stage. Albert Hammond Jr. helped bring the Stratocaster back to the fore in the early 2000s. He has a keen melodic sense and rhythmic playing style that we wanted to honor—as a member of a huge, stadium-level band in the past 20 years—The Strokes—and as a solo artist, who puts out great records.”

“We’re also adding new colors to two of our most successful artist signature models, the Johnny Marr Jaguar and the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster, which will be offered in Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet,” he added. “Johnny’s a fan and collector of guitars in ‘60s era vintage colors and we’re always making him one-offs of his signature model in those unique colorways—like Lake Placid Blue; and when he plays them live, the phone starts to ring with fans asking for them.”

These highly collectible Artist Signature models ($874.99$1799.99), include:

  • Flea Jazz Bass Active – $1,699.99 (Launching October 2018) sports a satin finish with matching headstock. The custom-shaped Jazz Bass body and a hot Fender humbucking pickup with an Aguilar OBP-1 18-volt preamp allows this bass to crank out massive output, perfect for pounding a stadium with the power of funk. The brainchild of Flea and Fender Custom Shop Master Builder Jason Smith, also a Flea/Red Hot Chili Peppers fan and bass player himself—this is the bass Flea plays live in concert.

  • Albert Hammond Jr. Stratocaster$874.99 (Launching October 2018) is a 1985 reissue of a ‘72 Strat® with a unique touch. It features replicated Hammond Jr. customized pickups switching: pickup switch position four activates the neck and bridge pickups in tandem, while positions one and three are reversed from the traditional layout. Hammond Jr.’s signature graces the back of the large ‘70s-style headstock, while other ‘70s-inspired features include bullet truss rod nut, 3-bolt “F”-stamped neck plate with period-correct Micro-Tilt™ adjustment and a ‘70s-era logo.

  • Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster$899.99 (Launching Fall 2018) gives players the same fiery tone and playing feel. Full of incendiary vintage tone and classic style, this extraordinary instrument features signature touches and unique appointments based on his distinctive “flipped-over” guitars. A trio of unsurpassed American Vintage ‘65 single-coil pickups includes a reverse-slant bridge pickup, producing uniquely inspiring tone with tight, warm sound and enhanced upper harmonics and definition. The highly versatile 9.5”-radius “C”-shaped maple neck with medium jumbo frets offers a flatter playing surface. The Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster is offered in 3 Color Sunburst and Ultra Violet (limited edition in 2018)—Pantone’s “Color of the Year” for 2018.

  • Johnny Marr Jaguar$1,799.99 (Launching Summer 2018) is based on Marr’s modified 1965 Jaguar. Originally launched in 2012, the Johnny Marr Jaguar—one of Fender’s more successful signature models—is getting a limited run in a new ‘60s vintage-era color: Lake Placid Blue, which coincides with the release of his new album, Call The Comet. Dual custom-wound Bare Knuckle® Johnny Marr single-coil pickups crank out incisive tone that’s just the thing for slashing through a sonically dense mix. Also featured are a four-position blade pickup, thicker tone and higher output, dual upper-horn slide switches, and a 7.25”-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 vintage-style frets.

Gretsch introduces several limited edition models as well as new colors for core models

Gretsch® is excited to introduce several new limited edition models including a pair of Streamliner models with the G2420T-P90 Limited Edition Streamliner™ Hollow Body P90 with Bigsby® and theG2655TG-P90 Limited Edition Streamliner™ Center Block Jr. P90 with Bigsby® and Gold Hardware, as well as theG6136T-59 Limited Edition ’59 Falcon™ with Bigsby®, G6134T Limited Edition Penguin™ with Bigsby®, G5655TG Limited Edition Electromatic® Center Block Jr. Single-Cut with Bigsby® and Gold Hardware and G5021E Limited Edition Rancher™ Penguin™ Parlor.

Gretsch has also added new colors to its core lineup with the G5420T Electromatic® Hollow Body Single Cut with Bigsby® in Candy Apple Red and the G6659TG Players Edition Broadkaster® Jr. Center Block Single-Cut with String-Thru Bigsby® and Gold Hardware in Vintage White.

The G2420T-P90 Limited Edition Streamliner™ Hollow Body P90 with Bigsby® adds a sonic twist by combining the Broad’Tron™ bridge pickup with a P90 neck pickup. The single-coil P90 Dog Ear neck pickup spawns a vibrant, fat tone while the Broad’Tron neck pickup offers a throaty humbucker bite.

A fast-playing 12”-radius rosewood fingerboard with elegant pearloid block inlays and 22 medium jumbo frets sits atop the bound nato neck with a thin “U”- shaped profile.

The Bigsby-licensed B60 vibrato tailpiece adds shimmer and expression, while the Adjusto-Matic™ bridge with secured rosewood base and synthetic bone nut grant amazing tuning stability.

The G2420T-P90 combines all the classic vintage style to expect from Gretsch —a gorgeous Midnight Wine Satin finish, vintage-style black control knobs, F Holes, elegant body binding, slick-looking nickel hardware, arched laminated maple construction and a three-ply black/white/black pickguard with the Gretsch logo.

Offered in a stunning Riviera Blue Satin finish, the G2655TG-P90 Limited Edition Streamliner™ Center Block Jr. P90 with Bigsby® and Gold Hardware is designed for three simple things—high gain-friendly performance, slick, easy playability, and spectacular style.

The secret to the Streamliner’s sound is threefold—the Broad’Tron™ neck pickup, the P90 bridge pickup and the spruce center block. The single-coil P90 Soap Bar bridge pickup spawns a brighter and more transparent tone than a traditional humbucker, yet still has that throaty thick midrange for a unique tone.

A lightweight spruce center block runs the length of the body, reinforcing the top while eliminating undesired feedback for volume-friendly performance on modern stages.

A sophisticated rendition of the original, the G6136T-59 Limited Edition ’59 Falcon™ with Bigsby® combines period-accurate features and appointments from the golden age of electric guitars.

A pair of TV Jones® Ray Butts Ful-Fidelity pickups generates powerful tone and unparalleled dynamics. A highly resonant laminated maple top with 1959-style trestle bracing and laminated maple back and sides make this instrument a veritable cannon.

The string-thru Bigsby® B6CP vibrato tailpiece adds expressive shimmer, while the pinned rocking bar bridge and Graph Tech® TUSQ™ XL nut combine for impeccable tuning stability.
Satisfying eyes and ears with its golden tones and gleaming looks, this rare Lake Placid Blue guitar comes alive in the player’s hands, singing with its distinctive voice at every strum.

The G6134T Limited Edition Penguin™ with Bigsby® takes Gretsch’s rarest bird and decks it out in a flaxen Casino Gold finish, complemented by a matching headstock, glittering silver sparkle binding with white/black/ white/black purfling and chrome hardware, including a banjo arm rest.

The chambered mahogany single-cutaway body magnifies harmonic richness by letting air resonate between the maple top and body for livelier, more articulate tone. Dual TV Jones® TV Classic pickups deliver pure Gretsch power, with Squeezebox paper-in-oil capacitors under the hood for even smoother vintage tone.

The G6134 also includes a no-load tone control for smoother tonal taper while unleashing full-throttle Filter’Tron™ power, and a Bigsby B3C vibrato tailpiece.

Painstakingly crafted with essential Gretsch sound, style and playability, the G5655TG Limited Edition Electromatic® Center Block Jr. Single-Cut with Bigsby® and Gold Hardware is designed for that pure and powerful Gretsch sound at high volume.

Offering excellent playability, the 12”-radius laurel fingerboard hosts 22 medium jumbo frets and Neo-Classic™ thumbnail inlays. Its dual Black Top Filter’Tron™ humbucking pickups deliver bold, dynamic and articulate tone with enhanced sonic punch.

Delivering fearless and electrifying Gretsch authenticity, this limited edition offering also boasts stage-stealing style with its Snow Crest White finish and gleaming gold hardware, including the Bigsby B70 vibrato tailpiece, anchored Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and G-arrow knobs.

Available in a majestic Casino Gold finish with chrome hardware, the G5021E Limited Edition Rancher™ Penguin™ Parlor delivers classic Penguin style and appointments in a richly resonant parlor-size acoustic guitar.

The Fishman® Presys III pickup/preamp system provides a modern sonic complement to classic touches with a solid spruce top with maple back and sides, silver sparkle neck and body binding, Neo-Classic™ thumbnail fingerboard inlays, a silver plexi pickguard, “vertical wing” Gretsch® headstock logo, and more.

Available in a new and classic Vintage White finish with tortoise pickguard and gold hardware, the G6659TG Players Edition Broadkaster® Jr. Center Block with String-Thru Bigsby® packs two new U.S.-made Full’Tron™ pickups delivering full-spectrum sonic range with a growl unlike any other pickup, in addition to classic Gretsch chime, balance and brilliance.

Crafted for full-spectrum sound at high volume, the G6659TG also features a slightly smaller single-cutaway body for greater comfort, tonal focus and feedback resistance and a chambered spruce center block that enhances body resonance for more organic tone and comfortably lighter weight.

Alive and resonant, the G5420T Electromatic® Hollow Body Single Cut with Bigsby® has fully hollow build with a true Filter’Tron™ voice that explodes with huge punch and clear, strong presence.

Now available in a new luscious Candy Apple Red finish with chrome hardware, the G5420T features premium dual Black Top Filter’Tron humbucking pickups, versatile upgraded controls including master volume treble bleed circuit, oversized bound “F” holes and aged multi-ply body binding, smaller late-’50s G6120 bound headstock, Graph Tech® NuBone™ nut, pearloid Neo-Classic™ thumbnail fingerboard inlays and a Bigsby B60 vibrato tailpiece.

EVH unveils new Eruption tribute models

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of 1978 landmark album Van Halen, EVH is privileged to unveil three tribute “Eruption” models, including the Super ’78, ’78 Eruption Relic and ’78 Eruption.

On the cover of Van Halen’s eponymous debut album, Eddie Van Halen thrusts his black-and-white striped instrument towards the camera as if he’s showing you the future. He played this guitar on his unprecedented and mind-blowing instrumental track “Eruption”—hence the name of these new models— and almost immediately, this monumental instrument became a timeless icon, symbolic of a paradigm shift in guitar-driven rock and roll.

While many a fan has attempted to duplicate his guitar over the past 40 years, for the first time ever, EVH Gear is now recreating this instantly recognizable axe, as well as his period-correct case and case candy items.

Said Eddie Van Halen: “Of all the guitars I’ve ever built, the white and black guitar will always be my favorite because it did all the things I needed a guitar to do, which prior to that guitar did not exist. So much changed because of it. I recorded the first album with it and did the first world tour with it. The ‘78 Eruption tribute is as close to my original in sound and feel as humanly possible. I’m incredibly proud of it.”

Limited to only eight guitars, the Super ’78 model features all of the original “Eruption” guitar specs, including an ash Strat® body, bolt-on maple neck with oiled back finish, straight 12” radius maple fingerboard with katalox face dots, black side dots and 21 mowed-down jumbo frets, hand-cut black pickguard, EVH Frankenstein™ humbucking bridge pickup, vintage Fender® Stratocaster® bridge with a Kluson® brass block and Schaller® tuning keys. Its white-with-black-stripes motif paint job has been reliced to match the wear and tear from the band’s first-ever world tour, and is stylishly finished off with distressed eye-screw strap hooks and a 61071 stamped neck plate.

In a true homage to this pivotal period, EVH has also recreated Eddie Van Halen’s original G&G case (with a tour-worn outer treatment and distressed latches) and loaded it up with the very items used by him at the time, such as ’70s-era Fender Super Bullets, Van Halen ’70s tortoiseshell picks, ’78 chain strap and vintage 3-in-One oil can. This model is also accompanied with an exclusive collector’s booklet, a backstage pass vinyl cloth sticker and several autographed items including a certificate of authenticity, 8”x10” 1978 concert photo of Eddie Van Halen, vinyl copy of Van Halen and a rare original Van Halen Looney Tunes Merrie Melodies red vinyl.

Adding to the value and the once-in-a lifetime collector’s nature of this package, Eddie Van Halen played “Eruption” from Van Halen in its entirety on each guitar and then signed the back of the headstock, which was video recorded for prosperity and will be presented to the instrument’s future owner on an EVH thumb drive.

Limited to only 30 guitars, the ’78 Eruption Relic has also been recreated down to every last nick and scratch and shares all of specs as the Super ’78: ash Strat® body, bolt-on maple neck with oiled back finish, straight 12” radius maple fingerboard with katalox face dots, black side dots and 21 mowed-down jumbo frets, hand-cut black pickguard, EVH Frankenstein humbucking bridge pickup, vintage Fender® Stratocaster® bridge with a Kluson® brass block, Schaller® tuning keys, reliced white-with-black-stripes motif paint job, distressed eye-screw strap hooks and a 61071 stamped neck plate.

The ’78 Eruption Relic comes in a recreated G&G case with reliced handle and latches, and is loaded with ’70s-era Fender Super Bullets strings, Van Halen ’70s tortoiseshell picks, ’78 chain strap and 3-in-One oil can. This model is also accompanied by an exclusive collector’s booklet, a backstage pass vinyl cloth sticker, 8”x10” 1978 concert photo of Eddie Van Halen, signed certificate of authenticity and autographed vinyl copy of Van Halen.

Limited to a 40-piece run, the ’78 Eruption guitar is as it appeared in its original pristine condition, prior to Van Halen embarking on its first-ever world tour.

It features an ash Strat® body, bolt-on maple neck with oiled back finish, straight 12” radius maple fingerboard with katalox dots, black side dots and 21 jumbo frets, hand-cut black pickguard, EVH Frankenstein humbucking bridge pickup, vintage Fender® Stratocaster® bridge with Kluson® brass block, Schaller® tuning keys, white-with-black-stripes motif paint job, eye-screw strap hooks and a 61071 stamped neck plate.

The ’78 Eruption comes in a recreated G&G case and is loaded with ’70s-era Fender Super Bullets, Van Halen ’70s tortoiseshell picks, ’78 chain strap and 3-in-One oil can. This model is also accompanied by an exclusive collector’s booklet, backstage pass vinyl cloth sticker, 8”x10” 1978 concert photo of Eddie Van Halen, signed certificate of authenticity and autographed vinyl copy ofVan Halen.

The History

Back when Van Halen’s trailblazing album first appeared, nobody had ever seen or heard a guitar like the one Eddie Van Halen played on it because no such guitar ever existed. What was it? You couldn’t buy one.
That’s because he made it himself. The then 22-year-old Eddie Van Halen had the mind of not only a great musician, but also of an innovative inventor—a constant tinkerer who was always messing with his gear. He couldn’t help it. No off-the-shelf guitar had the features he needed to really let his playing take off, and he knew it. He’d tried a few staples in his formative years, but eventually found them all lacking in one way or another. So, he took matters into his own capable hands.

After starting out with his ’58 Fender Strat, Eddie decided he wanted a heavier piece of wood for the body, so he bought a Strat-shaped body for $50 and a neck for $80.

This new body, of course, came pre-routed for three single-coil pickups, so Van Halen again took up his chisel and soldering iron to install the humbucking pickup, which he had potted himself to reduce feedback by dipping it into a coffee can full of paraffin wax. Also to his preference, he removed the varnish from the neck, which was wider and thinner, and re-fretted it with larger fret wire and Crazy Glue.

It was this Strat body that first received the distinctive and soon-to-be-iconic striped paint job; Van Halen sprayed it with black and white acrylic-lacquer Schwinn bicycle paint. He cut out and mounted his own homemade black pickguard, covering the neck and middle pickup routings, and installed a single master volume knob (although the knob itself, famously, was a “Tone” knob), brass nut and the tailpiece from the ’58 Stratocaster.

Although it didn’t take long to build and although the whole shebang cost him less than $150, this guitar would change the world.

The Jimmie Vaughan Signature Stratocaster, priced at $4,800.00, is representative of how Vaughan currently prepares his guitar for stage use. Throughout the design process, the Fender Custom Shop and Vaughan worked together to create new custom hand-wound JLV pickups, JLV modified #2 wiring and carefully selected colors – Aged Olympic White, Wide-Fade 2-Color Sunburst and Aged Aztec Gold. What resulted was a ‘50s-style Strat featuring a select alder body with a lush Closet Classic lacquer finish. A standout classic, the ‘68 Paisley instruments feature a bold, psychedelic-inspired aesthetic straight from the “flower power” era. The Limited Edition ‘68 Paisley Strat Relic is an homage to these storied instruments, combining vintage-cool style with modern playability and tone. The two-piece alder body wears a Relic lacquer finish that will wear in a distinctly personal way. The lightly tinted riftsawn maple neck sports a urethane finish and medium-tinted lacquer headstock face—just like the originals. Gretsch honors Malcom Young with signature Jet

Gretsch® honors the late Malcolm Young, whose rock-solid rhythm guitar swagger and songwriting provided the unshakeable foundation for monumental rock titans AC/DC, with the G6131-MY Malcolm Young Signature Jet™.

The G6131-MY pays homage to Young’s famously battle-hardened Gretsch Jet. Nicknamed “The Beast,” Malcolm certainly made the instrument his own, not least by removing two of the three pickups, stripping away the finish, and pounding out some of the hardest and most memorable rhythms the world has heard.
“I mean, as soon as you hear that first… chord, you know it’s him,” said his brother Angus Young. “To do this… you have to be a master of rhythm, and that’s exactly what Mal [was].”

This model features the essential hallmarks of one of rock’s most iconic instruments including “DIY” pickup routes with simulated screw holes, chrome switch plugs, Space-Control™ bridge with ebony base and ‘60s-style tailpiece. Open-cavity thunder roars from the thin-skin satin finished chambered mahogany body and is magnified by a high-output TV Jones® Power’Tron™ pickup.

“AC/DC had a sound of their own and this guitar was the foundation of the sweet and nasty tone we all know them for,” said Social Distortion’s Mike Ness.

Malcolm Young’s fiery rock ‘n’ roll spirit lives on through AC/DC’s enduringly timeless music, and it is Gretsch’s great privilege to pay fitting tribute to him with a finely crafted instrument bearing his name.

The G6131-MY Malcolm Young Signature Jet will be available November 2018.

Serious sound that exceeds its appearance

Nutube is the new vacuum tube developed in a collaboration between KORG and Noritake Itron. This dream device uses vacuum fluorescent display technology to obtain the same vacuum tube sound and response, while eliminating the problematic aspects of a vacuum tube, and has begun being used by VOX as well as other musical instrument manufacturers. The Nutube is used in the VOX MINI SUPERBEETLE, faithfully reproducing the tonal character of VOX’s legendary AC30. The sparkling, chimey sound that has captivated guitarists for more than fifty years is alive and well in this new amplifier. Additionally, the traditional VOX tremolo effect has also been included. The amplitude of the tremolo also changes the depth of Nutube distortion, varying the sound, resulting a true tube driven tremolo effect. Also provided is a digital reverb that simulates a classic spring reverb, dramatically improving the potential for shaping your sound. An extension speaker cabinet can also be added to this package for more volume when you need it. The MINI SUPERBEETLE is not merely a reproduction of the classic stack; it is a true re-imagination of the amp that has been updated to meet the needs of today’s players.

An amp designed for fans of British Rock heritage; play it, and also enjoy it as décor

VOX boasts a sophisticated sense of design that is unmatched by any other guitar amp manufacturer. From a historical point of view, there is no other guitar amp that resonates so strongly with music aficionados in both looks and sound. Throughout VOX’s history, the AC100 stack set, wrapped in its chrome frame stand, stands out as one of the amps that exemplifies VOX and its lasting impact on pop culture during the height of the British Invasion. The VOX MINI SUPERBEETLE emanates the spirit of that shining history, and is the rare amp that you’ll enjoy not only while playing it, but also as décor. It’s a privilege that’s backed by more than sixty years of VOX history.
