Bose Professional expands DSP offerings

Bose Professional broadens its ControlSpace® sound processor line with six new DSP models and three attractive digital wall controllers.

The new ControlSpace CSP-1248 and CSP-428 commercial sound processors offer right-sized I/O and simplified configuration for small-to-medium-scale projects. They are designed to serve as standalone DSP’s in commercial applications such as retail stores and restaurants, or any public place where modest processing, high-quality sound and facilitated installation are desired. They include balanced analog I/O, RCA inputs, eight GPIs, one GPO, a mute contact, RS-232 serial, Ethernet network (for configuration or wall control) and Bose® AmpLink out, for simplified digital audio connectivity to supported power amplifiers.

The new ControlSpace CSP models feature a quick-setup workflow using an integrated webserver with browser-based control software. Much like setting up a wireless router, installers use their PC (or Mac) and web browser to access the CSP configuration page. This real-time interface features live metering and is designed to augment the natural workflow of commercial projects with common tasks such as setting sources, paging thresholds, adjusting EQs and tuning limiters presented in an intuitive and logical manner. This approach reduces complexity by presenting common processing needs for repeatable commercial applications, minimizing design errors and ultimately reducing installation time – without extensive DSP training.

The new CSP models include the following Bose-proprietary algorithms, configurable using the control software, that bring predictable, reliable operation to commercial sound systems:

  • AutoVolume compensation continuously adapts zone output level based on the ambient noise of that room (when paired with the new Bose ANC sense microphone accessory) to maintain consistent program material.
  • SmartBass dynamic equalization enhances the low-frequency output of small loudspeakers.
  • Opti-voice® paging provides a smooth transition between the music and page signals.
  • Opti-source® level management monitors the input level of up to four sources. Source levels are continually adjusted to maintain a consistent volume level among different source.

In addition to the new ControlSpace CSP processor line, Bose has also rolled out an update to two popular ControlSpace ESP fixed-I/O engineered sound processors. New variants of the Bose ESP-1240 and ESP-880 models have been upgraded based on integrator feedback to include options for Dante™ audio networking and Bose AmpLink connectivity. The new variants – the ESP-1240A, 1240AD, 880A and 880AD – inherit a fresh visual appearance while maintaining key features from their predecessors.

New ESP-1240A and ESP-880A engineered sound processors have 12×4 and 8×8 analog I/O, respectively, with integrated Bose AmpLink output for digital connections over CAT 5 to Bose AmpLink-equipped Bose amplifiers. The new ESP-1240AD and ESP-880AD versions have both AmpLink and 32×32 Dante onboard.  All four ESP models use ControlSpace Designer™ software for configuration, control and monitoring, and support scalable networked audio systems.

To complement both the new ControlSpace CSP and ESP processors, Bose has also introduced three new user-friendly digital wall controllers: the CC-1D, CC-2D and CC-3D.  Each model comes in white and is available in regional variants.  They feature attractive styling with a single rotary encoder and circular LED ring.  The CC-2D and CC-3D models allow the rotary encoder to be pushed for A/B or A/B/C/D source selection with LED source indicators on the panel.  In addition to the new digital wall controllers, the new CSP and ESP processors are supported by ControlSpace Remote, where customized control panels can be built and deployed to end users for wireless control of their systems from mobile phones, tablets or laptops.

Spitfire Audio launches LABS as an infinite series of free software instruments with Soft Piano and Strings

Spitfire Audio is proud to launch LABS — an infinite series of software instruments, free and easy to use; made by musicians in London for anyone, anywhere — with the popular Soft Piano and a new Strings library available as of May 31…

Ever-expanding British business Spitfire Audio has become a formidable force in the wonderful world of sample libraries and virtual instruments by virtue of its dedication to the art of recording and musicality. Company collaborations with the likes of Hans Zimmer and Ólafur Arnalds offer detailed recordings used by composers and music producers alike — albeit with no expense spared in their creation. From full orchestras to synthesisers, pianos to percussion, Spitfire Audio has recorded, in depth, the best players and instruments in the world.

While the company continues its collaborations with the world’s best composers, producers, engineers, and studios to create detailed and realistic recordings of instruments and sounds for use in computer-based music production, LABS lets loose a new series of tools that retain that dedication to quality but altogether remove the barrier to entry by offering a simplistic solution to music-making — instantly-playable, great-sounding instruments, all at no cost!

Commencing with the popular Soft Piano — based around a felted piano (originally recorded in October 2008 by Nick Taylor at Air-Edel Recording Studios in Marylebone, central London using two Schoeps CMC 5/U microphones with MK4 capsules that are still there to this day) — and Strings — a new string ensemble (recorded in October 2017 at Spitfire Audio’s London HQ, where one of the microphones used was a BBC AXB1, an iconic 1940s-vintage ribbon microphone featuring balanced wiring produced by the BBC and Marconi that became an interface metaphor for sound recording), these software instruments are free to install and easy to use. Ultimately, both work within a dedicated (AU-, AAX-, and VST-compatible) plugin possessing a strikingly simple user interface, invented in collaboration with UsTwo, one of the world’s best design and user-experience agencies (also responsible for making Spitfire Audio’s award-winning HANS ZIMMER STRINGS spectacular string sample library so simple to use)… because creativity shouldn’t be complicated.

Creatively serving as the sonic exploratory arm of Spitfire Audio, new LABS libraries will be released every month. Music makers may expect key traditional instruments alongside more experimental discoveries along the way; made by musicians in London for anyone, anywhere.

As such, Spitfire Audio clearly continues to stay true to its ethos of using live performances where possible, but when up against time and/or budgetary constraints, its innovative virtual instruments and sample libraries — LABS included (in the latter scenario, obviously) — are always the next best thing. That said, by paying performers and collaborators royalties, Spitfire Audio admirably assists with sustaining a phenomenal part of our musical heritage while championing innovation within it. Indeed, the LABS tagline says it all: Let’s all become something.

Feel free to join the LABS programme — an infinite series of software instruments, free to install and easy to use, delivered straight to your inbox — by creating an account here: https://www.spitfireaudio.com/labs/

Amphion announces FlexBase25 – a bass extension and management system

Finnish manufacturerAmphion Loudspeakers announces its long-awaited subwoofer – FlexBase25. The new system is promoted for the first time by Ansata – Amphion’s distributor in India – during the PALM Expo in Mumbai, May 31 – June 2, 2018.

Amphion remains faithful to its concept of designing innovative and unconventional products for the studio monitoring realm. After introducing its line of nearfield passive studio monitors four years ago, and launching the low-frequency BaseOne25 and BaseTwo25 extension systems, Amphion now reveals FlexBase25. The new product is not a typical subwoofer, but a highly flexible stereo bass extension and management system with a separate LFE-channel input, which is equally suited for stereo and multichannel applications.

The nature of sound-making has changed and the days of specialization are over for most. The demands for monitoring can strongly vary depending on the personal preferences. While wet, fun and vibey can be a great plus during songwriting or early stages of mixing, neutrality, close to surgical precision and honesty are crucial to achieving the translation needed.

The wide adjustment possibilities of FlexBase25 allow the user to change the flavor based on the task at hand. FlexBase25’s crossover frequency can be adjusted within a wide range of 35-260 Hz. The ability to control the mono/stereo spread ensures that the sub integrates with the monitors even when a higher crossover point is used. Unlike conventional subwoofers, the system is designed to be easy to set-up and intuitive to use. The LFE input has +10dB sensitivity compared to the main channels, but no built-in lowpass filtering. The LFE channel can be linked between several units which then allows building 7.1 and upward systems.

“A single mono subwoofer is part of a movie format, but we do not believe that it is good enough to be used in music production. In order to create correct imaging the stereo information needs to be maintained throughout the whole frequency band,” says Anssi Hyvönen, founder and Managing Director of Amphion Loudspeakers. “Our FlexBase25 is a new take on the subwoofer design that should fit especially well with the rapidly changing landscape of modern music-making”.FlexBase25 is a complete system consisting of the subwoofer with two back to back 10” woofers and required cabling and electronics. The subwoofer is powered by Amphion FlexAmp500, which also houses the company’s proprietary filter module in its 2U rack enclosure. The system will start shipping during the 3rd quarter of 2018. Price still to be announced.

The BaseTwo25 low-frequency extension system, announced during Winter NAMM 2018, is already shipping and available for order across Amphion’s sales network.

Electro-Harmonix unveils the Oceans 11 multifunction digital reverb pedal

Electro-Harmonix introduces the Oceans 11, a compact pedal with advanced functionality that features 11 reverb styles ranging from essential to exotic. The Oceans 11’s reverbs are:

  • HALL – reverb characteristic of a grand concert hall
  • SPRING – pays homage to vintage Fender® tube reverbs
  • PLATE – a lush plate reverb
  • REVRS – emulates the reverse reverb effect created in studios where a note’s reverb fades-in backwards
  • ECHO – reverb plus delay, a digital delay feeds into the Plate reverb
  • TREM – reverb plus tremolo applied to both the wet and dry mix of a Hall reverb
  • MOD – modulated reverb, a combination of various modulations creates rich reverb tails
  • DYNA – three dynamic reverb algorithms: swell, gate and duck
  • AUTO-INF – Auto infinite reverb that triggers a reverb wash for each note or chord. When a new one is struck, the previously resounding reverb wash crossfades to the new one
  • SHIM – Shimmer generates a rich octave-shifted reverb wash
  • POLY – Polyphonic reverb, two configurable bi-directional pitch shifts

The Oceans 11’s Mode button lets the user select up to three variations of many of its reverbs for greater variety. The pedal also features powerful, yet intuitive “hidden” parameters accessible thru its Secondary Knob Mode that enable the player to take greater control of its effects.

An internal Tails switch provides a choice of whether the reverb effect fades out naturally or stops immediately when the pedal is switched to bypass. In most settings the pedal is also capable of producing infinite reverb which can be played over with a fresh reverb effect complete with adjustable parameters.

The Oceans 11 comes equipped with a standard EHX 9.6DC 200mA power supply, is available now and features a U.S. Street Price of $147.80.

Dorico Pro 2 and Dorico Elements 2 scoring software now available

Steinberg is pleased to announce the release both of a new version of its professional music notation application, Dorico, and of a new entry-level music notation application, Dorico Elements. With the introduction of Dorico Elements, Dorico is now called Dorico Pro, to reflect its high-end capabilities.

Dorico Pro 2 adds significant new functionality across the whole application, with a particular focus on supporting media musicians working in film, TV, video games and other production environments. First, Dorico Pro 2 now allows composing to picture, with features to attach a video to the project, add markers for specific events in the action, and tools to help find the best tempo for the material. Second, new tools for automation in Play mode have been added, allowing users to make fine adjustments to tempo and MIDI controllers using familiar graphical tools.

Scores and parts can be given the Hollywood look with new options for time signatures, allowing them to be shown centered on every instrument bracket or drawn above particular instruments, drawing attention to them — essential in action-packed music with many meter changes.

Support for notations widely used in commercial and jazz music has also been expanded in Dorico Pro 2, with new support for rhythmic slashes and bar repeats, widely used in music that includes repeated patterns, and which help players keep their place and understand the structure of the music more quickly.

New time-saving tools for arrangers and orchestrators have also been added, including multi-paste for copied material to be pasted to multiple staves in a single operation, new explode and reduce tools for repurposing material for more or fewer instruments, and powerful new tools to scale existing notes into tuplets.

Dorico Elements 2

Dorico Elements is the new entry-level member of the Dorico product family. Boasting many of the powerful and time-saving features of Dorico Pro, Dorico Elements is the perfect starting point for composers, arrangers, and students. With a simple user interface that is quick to master, Dorico Elements provides fluid input and editing, beautiful graphical notation, and great-sounding playback, delivering results that maintain the overall standard for which Dorico is renowned.

Dorico Elements is ideal for home use or use by students in secondary education. Allowing the creation of publication-quality music for ensembles of up to 12 players, with the same automatic music layout and engraving of Dorico Pro, Dorico Elements is the ideal choice for musicians starting out in composition and arranging.

“With several new features aimed at commercial music, we are excited about accelerating the use of Dorico Pro 2 in composition, arranging and orchestration work for film, TV and games,” commented Daniel Spreadbury, product marketing manager for Dorico, “and the introduction of Dorico Elements provides an inexpensive way for the next generation of composers and arrangers to experience these features in a simpler, more streamlined package.”
