The reverb sound of Sunset Sound in IK Multimedia’s Sunset Sound Studio Reverb

IK Multimedia announces the immediate availability of T-RackS Sunset Sound Studio Reverb, the newest effect plug-in within their industry-standard T-RackS® 5 mixing and mastering software line. It brings the unique acoustic ambience and other iconic audio characteristics of Los Angeles’ legendary Sunset Sound recording facility to musicians everywhere, and is suitable for use both as an individual plug-in and inside T-RackS 5. Using a combination of IK’s unique Volumetric Response Modeling (VRM™) technology and advanced physical modeling to recreate Sunset Sound’s custom consoles, T-RackS Sunset Sound Studio Reverb offers a powerful sonic experience that lets users add a distinct sound from many hit songs recorded at Sunset Sound to their tracks as if they were at the studio themselves.

IK worked in collaboration with current studio owner Paul Camarata, multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning producer/engineer Ross Hogarth (Van Halen, Doobie Brothers) and many of Sunset Sound’s engineers to give recording engineers unprecedented access to the ambient sound and vibe of the studios in this landmark facility, where a who’s who of music has recorded for 60 years, including the Doors, the Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and countless others. Decades of session sheets were studied at the studio to recreate specific mic positions and placement used on countless hits, with a high level of collaboration between IK and the studio to achieve accuracy and realism when emulating these distinct sounds in software.

Iconic consoles and deep authenticity
This new plug-in carefully captures each space, recorded using Sunset Sound’s high-end mic collection, to deliver not just the acoustics but also the unique vibe of the space. IK recreated them using its unique Volumetric Response Modeling (VRM™), an advanced hybrid convolution technique, to deliver the highest-quality reverb effects possible and ensure the results of T-RackS’s processing were virtually indistinguishable from recordings made in the real rooms.

IK also used its award-winning physical modeling techniques to recreate each studio’s vintage customized consoles (an API-based Sunset Sound custom, a Class-A-Discrete Neve® 8880 and an API/DeMedio® Sunset Sound Custom), preamplifier and signal path, to add the perfect harmonic elements and sonic signature. All together, this results in a faithful studio quality reverb that adds a very special warmth and tone while also offering the same signature ambient sound as the timeless records that were recorded at the studio for decades by top artists and bands. All of this is complemented by an array of flexible control options for further tone shaping.

Studio owner Paul Camarata notes, “For 60 years, the sound of our studios has been heard on hit records around the world. Now, we’re proud to be working with IK Multimedia to bring our famed sound to everyone’s recordings. Sunset Sound Studio Reverb really nails the essence of our distinct character.”

A wide variety of reverbs
Users can select from among the various vintage reverb options accessible from each of the three studios found in the facility, including an Echoplate® and EMT® 140 plate reverb, and an AKG® BX-20E spring reverb.
The choices are:

  • Live Room: Studio 1, Studio 2 or Studio 3
  • Iso Booth: Studio 1, Studio 2 or Studio 3
  • 3 Live Echo Chambers from Studio 1, Studio 2 or Studio 3
  • 2 Different Plate reverbs and 1 Spring Reverb

In the control room
An intuitive GUI provides a realistic experience, offering information and insights about each particular room, as well as additional controls to help users shape the sound to suit their tastes.

The additional controls include:

  • Adjustable decay time and pre-delay
  • High-pass and low-pass filters
  • Low and high shelving EQs
  • Stereo image width
  • Wet/dry mix
  • Plus famous mic position options in studio 2, dampening options, and more

u-he offers 75 snappy analog hits for Repro-1 ranging from deep, dark kicks to metallic fantasy instruments

RePercussion for Repro-1
75 dynamic percussion sounds for Repro-1 by Electric Himalaya

Our good friend Electric Himalaya recently spent some quality time concentrating on the percussive talents of Repro-1. We are now happy to announce the results of his toils into the wee small hours: RePercussion. A compact library of 75 snappy analogue hits ranging from deep, dark kicks to metallic fantasy instruments.

Quoting Electric Himalaya:
I love to create synth drums and percussion sounds, and I often turn to them as an anitdote to the countless pads, leads, basses and other typical presets in order to get my bearings again: To have some fun, to create something weird and wonderful yet still usable… Creating RePercussion was an almost cathartic endeavour – I thoroughly enjoyed making this collection of drums, percussive ‘plinks’ and ‘bongs’, and I hope you enjoy using them in your tracks!
Repro-1 RePercussion is available from our website starting today

Studio Technologies announces new Dante-enabled StudioComm multichannel monitoring solution

Studio Technologies introduces its new StudioComm Dante Audio-over-IP-enabled multichannel monitoring system, the Model 792 Central Controller and the Model 793 Control Console, at NAB 2020 (Booth C7049). The new system combines a robust rack-mounted main electronics unit with a desktop user control surface. The “fully-pro” signal path uses programmable logic to support both digital and analog audio. An extensive set of configuration features allow the system to support next-gen immersive formats including 5.1.4, 7.1.4, and 10.2.

“We’ve designed this system to fit easily into any professional multichannel environment,” says Gordon Kapes, president of Studio Technologies. “More and more studios are switching to Dante and AES67 networked audio infrastructures, but they still need to support analog – this system provides both. As with all Studio Technologies products, users can be confident that what they hear on the output is extremely close to what went in – nothing more.”

The Model 792 Central Controller has multiple digital and analog inputs with configurable time delay, source selection, and level control. Digital and analog outputs support formats of up to 16-channels. Analog two-channel inputs and outputs offer convenient support for stereo reference signals. Features, including trim levels, delays, dim and reference level, and pre/post outputs, can be optimized using the system’s built-in web server-based menu pages. An FPGA-based 32-bit audio architecture offers high headroom and superior audio quality.

The multichannel analogue I/O stems use the Model 792’s rear-panel 25-pin D-subs in banks of eight channels, while a front panel 3.5mm stereo jack and level control provides a two-channel input for laptops, phones, and other stereo reference feeds. The digital audio I/O uses two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to support switched and redundant Dante. A separate GigE Ethernet interface provides access to the Model 792’s management web pages. These allow connection to fully-independent audio and management networks. The unit also features both universal AC mains and 10-18V DC inputs, which allow redundant power supply operation.

All analog and Dante sources have independent level trim controls. Input signal delay of up to 999 milliseconds allows synchronization with video display latency. On the output side, all Dante and analogue channels have independent trim controls, pre- and post-fader source selection, selectable dim attenuation, user-definable reference levels, and custom labelling for the multichannel and stereo stems.

The Model 793 Control Console provides convenient, fast, and intuitive selection of all sources and outputs, reference level, dim function, mutes, and solos. The user control surface features tactile, responsive, single-function buttons and a high-resolution encoder along with a graphics display. Four user definable input stems and two outputs are directly selectable on the front panel, along with mute/solo buttons for every individual channel. Users can also select dim, reference level, and mute all functions. The rotary encoder supports level control for stems of up to 16-channels. The graphics display provides numerical level and status information, along with important system information such as the system’s LAN IP addresses.

“We have been developing Dante networked audio solutions for several years now, “says Kapes. “This system is an important step forward for us and represents excellent value and flexibility for any broadcast operation, post-production facility, or music studios that needs a robust, time-saving, and ergonomic networked audio solution.”

— The User Interface —

DYNAMIC & MODERN

The name MOTION KEYS is ideal for this instrument as every preset has been infused with an array of sonic movement. Same Logic used complex programming techniques coupled with superb user interface animation effects to push the creative boundaries of each keyboard instrument. The UI’s dynamic performance animations introduce creative and flexible automation through oscillators and arpeggiators to keep the timbres in motion. Once you start adding layers of motion it becomes extremely important to have an intuitive interface that provides a straightforward approach to preset performance and construction as there are so many avenues to explore. Those who want to dive deep can easily experiment with the total customization options within. All of this flexibility begins with a dynamic preset browsing system and an easy to manage interface compartmentalized into 4 main sections: CORE, STEP, FX & MASTER.

The CORE section is used to load individual sound sources (samples) and core presets (instruments) into any of the 4 cores. At the center of the CORE section is a XY controller used for blending and automating all cores simultaneously. Here you will also find powerful mixing tools for each core, including independent LFO controls to maximize motion, adding wobble and gated effects.

The STEP section is where the magic happens, applying animation to all 4 cores. Add movement with ease driven by the Step Animator arpeggiation engine. The Step Animator gives each core a unique arp sequence, not just a run-of-the-mill arpeggiator pattern, but a slew of dynamic arpeggiated performance parameters. The STEP section offers over 320 unique animation presets. With 4 randomizable step animators, 1 for each core, infinite motion abounds, resulting in limitless combinations of sounds and animations.

The FX section is where multiple effects combine to create your dream tone, with up to 6 insert effects slots for each of core. With over 25 different effects to choose from and the added power of animation via the multiple FX animators, you can take motion to complex new places. The Step Animator and Dynamic FX Animators are on separate internal clocks, allowing even more freedom to create syncopated and polyrhythms between each core.

The MASTER section sums up the final mix with 6 dynamic effect inserts in 1 serial effects chain. This is extremely handy for polishing the entire multicore instrument to create a seamless whole. From compression and saturation to delay and reverb, use the many and varied controls to instantly make presets production-ready.

UNLIMITED TWEAKABILITY

Time is money and deadlines have never been tighter, thus Sample Logic has gone to great lengths to save you time and frustration with MOTION KEYS. Finding the perfect sound quickly and easily is vitally important, so efficiency defines every step of the interface. Locating sounds and presets is a breeze using the multi-tag browser system. Each source, core, and multi-core preset is tagged with descriptive genre driven meta tags. From there, favorite presets to save them for future use – even when you close and reopen the instrument! The browser is a one-stop solution for choosing presets and playback manipulations. Access sources, cores and multicore instrument presets with the ability to audition and activate step animators whilst browsing, or performing. Keep it simple, or design wildly complex sequences…it’s up to you! Load individual core presets that merge into 1 complete 4-core instrument, or load a fully built multicore preset and you’re done. Too simple? Then choose to browse using search filters that can focus only on sources, effects, patterns, or any combination of these. Isolate specific attributes of a preset while sorting through, one by one. Only looking for a step animator pattern, or sound source? Then select it in the browser and leave the other parameters as they were. Pick and mix which elements of the presets to use to create your own unique combinations.

RANDOMIZE MODE

In a hurry? Sample Logic has equipped over a dozen parameters for randomization within the MOTION KEYS interface, allowing you to rapidly tap into trillions of combinations with deep and dynamic creative effects. Use these as they are, or as starting points for your own custom instruments. Simply click the randomization button and prepare for infinite creativity. The interface’s intelligent randomization technology will generate inspiring results on the spot, every time!

New instruments from Dean Guitars – The Exile Select Series

Dean Guitars’ journey of innovation continues with the introduction of the Exile Select Series of electric guitars. The six new models in this collection are designed with high-performance players in mind, and features that will help unleash the beast of tonal flexibility and attain the next level of shredding glory.

The Exile Select Series is just one of the collections in Dean Guitars’ Select Series, a top-tier import line that launched last year. These are well-appointed guitars, designed by the musician staff at Dean Guitars, with premium pickups, stunning finishes, and myriad features meant to enhance the playing experience in a way that allows players to define their own sound and style. The six new models in the Exile Select Series now give players more options, including two finish options, 6- or 7-string configuration, and with or without a Floyd Rose tremolo bridge system.

Players can now choose an Exile guitar with either a burled poplar top or a satin-finished quilt maple top. Both variants offer a high-access alder body and a three-piece Slim D-shape maple neck. The ebony fretboard, with 24 jumbo frets and pearloid block inlays, is carved to a flat 16-inch radius for easier scale runs and string bends. The bolt-on neck (25 ½’’ scale length) is supported by a dual-action truss rod. Mini Grover tuners at the headstock on all Exile models assist with precise and consistent tuning. The body offers Dean Guitars’ iconic Exile shape as well as a beveled edge to further improve player comfort. On each Exile guitar, the breathtaking finish and 5-ply body and headstock binding tie it all together with class and ferocity.

For electronics, the Exile Select Series offers versatile EMG 57TW / 66TW coil-split pickups with Dean Guitars’ exclusive brushed chrome finish. The push/pull volume and tone pots allow each pickup to be split from a humbucker to a single coil, and the 5-way selector gives the player unlimited options.

The Exile Select Series is designed by professional musicians for professional musicians without breaking the bank. With street prices ranging from $1049 to $1299, players can feel confident in choosing a high-quality shred machine that won’t incinerate their bank account.

Now the Celestion BN15-400X and BL10-100X bass speakers have been faithfully captured as bass speaker impulse responses. Both the Celestion BN15-400X and BL10-100X bass speaker impulse responses are available for download in 2×10 (Ported) and 4×10 (Closed Back) cabinet configurations – or as a Bass Bundle with added Playing Style mixes.

Celestion’s complete range of impulse responses includes a number of options for bass players, featuring many of the company’s best-selling bass guitar speakers. And Celestion’s meticulous impulse response capture process has been used for the company’s bass IRs.

In particular, this meant selecting the most appropriate microphones for recording bass guitar.

Each speaker has been recorded in the most popular cabinet combinations for that speaker type, with three different microphones – a Sennheiser MD421, Neumann U47 FET and AKG D112 – each in six different positions for additional tonal variety, creating an extensive IR library for each speaker. Also included is a room mic recording using a Neumann TLM 107 (the same room mic used for our regular IRs.)

A new addition to the bass impulse responses is an extra high frequency recording (using a Neumann KM84), which can be used on its own or mixed with one of the other microphones to add an extra bit of ‘zing’ to the top-end.
And the Bass Impulse Responses feature a selection of extra mic mixes for you to experiment with, including: D112+KM84, U47+KM84, MD421+KM84, D112+MD421+KM84, U47+MD421+KM84, U47+D112+KM84, All mics, All mics+Room Stereo and All mics+Room Mono.

New “Playing Style” packs are also available separate add on options, which have optimised the IRs for a range of different playing methods: Finger basic, Finger warmth detail, Plectrum (Pick) basic, Plectrum (Pick) aggressive and Slap.

As with all genuine Celestion IRs, each of the new bass speaker impulse responses are downloaded in .WAV format for compatibility with most DAWs, IR plug-ins and amp modelling software.

The new  BL10-100X and BN15-400X Impulse Responses join the growing collection of other Bass IRs including the BN10-200X BN15-300XPULSE10PULSE12 and PULSE15, as well as all the other genuine Celestion acclaimed guitar speaker Impulse Responses such as the:  A-Type,  Celestion Blue,  Celestion CreamCelestion GoldClassic Lead 80Heritage G12H 55HzHeritage G12M, G12 EVHG12K-100G12-35XC, G12T-75,  G12-50GL Lynchback,   G12-H150 Redback, G12M Greenback, G12M-65 Creamback, G12M-75 CreambackG12H Anniversary, G12-65Neo CreambackV-Type,  Vintage 30 and many other models.

About Celestion Impulse Responses

Celestion IRs, which capture the essential behavior of the cabinet in the specific space in which it was recorded, including the frequency and phase response of single drivers as well as the interaction of multiple speakers, offer the user significant benefits. In both recording and live production, Celestion IRs enable the desired tone to be precisely and consistently reproduced regardless of the music recording or live sound environment. And IR users can escape the limitations of a single mic and cabinet setup and explore a universe of possibilities to create the perfect tone. Once you find a tone that you love, it can be precisely recreated, in the studio or on the road, time after time. And the IRs allow Celestion customers to audition specific models before purchasing one or more physical speakers.

Celestion IR digital downloads are available in uncompressed, industry standard .WAV format at 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz, 88.2 kHz and 96 kHz sample rates at 24 bit depth, in lengths of 200 and 500 milliseconds Once the files are downloaded and unzipped, users simply load the IRs into a convolution plug-in in their DAW or into other processing hardware. These formats will work in all known hardware capable of loading IRs, and for the most popular hardware Celestion have already grouped together the correct formats. Guitar processor manufacturers supported include (but are not limited to) Atomic Amps, Fractal Audio Systems, Kemper, Line 6, Logidy, Positive Grid, Two Notes, Headrush and Yamaha. The Celestion IR files may be downloaded in the sample rate and length appropriate for the hardware being used or as a complete package of all rates and lengths. Certain third party hardware requires the files to be converted into a proprietary format before use.
